Best SMS marketing app for Shopify, read for consent and sending hours
6 apps comparedVendor claims read 2026-10-22
For the owner or ops lead of a Shopify store that texts customers: the checkout box, the pop-up, the cart reminder at 8:15 p.m.. A Shopify store has two consent records, Shopify's and the app's, and most of its texts fire on their own. We read six apps' help centres and Shopify's own docs on 2026-10-22; every status below names the page it came from. Texting platforms outside Shopify are compared in best SMS marketing software.
Verdict by use case
Best overall
Consent moves both ways between Klaviyo and Shopify, every profile and export carries a consent timestamp, and plain-language opt-outs act by default. Campaigns and flows both respect the subscriber's quiet hours.
Best for cart and browse automations
No number becomes a subscriber without a code or a reply of Y, and that request names cart reminders. Automations triggered at night wait for morning in the subscriber's time zone, with stricter state windows built in.
Best for fixed, conservative hours
Promotional texts and flows stop from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. in the subscriber's time zone without any setting to get wrong. Popups can verify the number with an on-page code, and free-text opt-outs act automatically.

Six apps, nine requirements
Six rows follow the subscriber from the opt-in record to the export; three are Shopify's own: whether automated texts respect quiet hours, whether the app picks up opt-ins from Shopify's checkout box, and whether it writes consent back to the Shopify customer. The 10DLC row is left out: Klaviyo, Postscript, Omnisend, Recart and Shopify Messaging send US texts from toll-free numbers (Klaviyo also from short codes), which go through toll-free verification instead. "Our pick" marks the best-overall verdict.

Where a store's SMS consent comes from
A Shopify store collects SMS consent in four places, and each one saves something different. The checkout box writes to Shopify; a pop-up writes to the app. Here is what each path keeps and where it breaks.
| Path | What gets saved, and when | Where it goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify checkout boxSettings > Checkout > Marketing opt-in, SMS set to "Checkout only" | On the Shopify customer, once the customer submits the checkout. Apps read it at different moments: Klaviyo when the shopper clicks Continue to shipping, Postscript after the order is placed. | The default label talks about news and offers. Shopify says to change it if you send abandoned cart reminders, and Shopify Messaging's own number verification rejects a label that no longer says the texts are marketing. |
| App pop-up or sign-up formThe SMS app's own popup, embedded form or landing page | In the app, with whatever record it keeps. It reaches Shopify only if the app writes consent back. | Disclosure text is yours to get right. Omnisend will not publish an SMS form without a consent checkbox; Postscript and Recart can verify the number with a code typed on the page. |
| KeywordThe shopper texts a word such as JOIN to your number | In the app, against the number that texted. The display ad or sign carrying the keyword is your disclosure. | Klaviyo sets keywords to single opt-in by default even when the list uses double opt-in, so check the keyword's own setting. |
| Import or switch of appsA CSV upload, or a migration from another SMS tool | Whatever the file carries. Shopify's customer export has an Accepts SMS Marketing column of yes or no, with no date. | Klaviyo does not sync historical Shopify SMS subscribers; they are uploaded by hand. Attentive asks for its Outside Subscriber List Certification form before it moves another tool's subscribers. |

What Shopify itself keeps
Each Shopify customer's phone number carries its own SMS consent record, separate from email consent. An app that reads it at sign-up and writes to it on every opt-out keeps one answer to "did this person agree?". An app that keeps its own copy leaves two, and a lawyer will ask which one you used.
- marketingState
- NOT_SUBSCRIBED, PENDING, SUBSCRIBED, UNSUBSCRIBED, REDACTEDWhere the number stands now. UNSUBSCRIBED means it was subscribed once.
- marketingOptInLevel
- SINGLE_OPT_IN, CONFIRMED_OPT_IN, UNKNOWNWhether the customer passed a confirming step. UNKNOWN is the value to worry about.
- consentUpdatedAt
- date and timeWhen consent was given; if none was sent, Shopify uses the time the record arrived.
- consentCollectedFrom
- sourceWhere the consent came from, plus the store location when there is one.
Which store texts are marketing
The texts that earn a store the most money are the ones the rules treat as marketing. The FCC's own definition settles most of them.
"The term telemarketing means the initiation of a telephone call or message for the purpose of encouraging the purchase or rental of, or investment in, property, goods, or services, which is transmitted to any person."
| Text | Reads as | What to hold before it sends |
|---|---|---|
| Abandoned cart or checkout | Marketing | Written consent from before the cart was left. Klaviyo and Postscript pass on the carriers' cart rules: one text in the cart flow, sent within 48 hours of the trigger. Klaviyo adds double opt-in and a sign-up line that names cart reminders. |
| Browse abandonment | Marketing | The same consent. Klaviyo recommends applying the cart rules to browse flows too. |
| Back in stock | Marketing | Written consent, and quiet hours: Klaviyo lists it among the flow messages that are not transactional. |
| Welcome series, second text onward | Marketing | Quiet hours apply. Klaviyo treats only the first welcome text as a subscription confirmation, and only while it carries no offer. |
| Opt-in confirmation | Confirmation | Program name, help contact, how to opt out, frequency and charges (CTIA's five parts). Postscript and Recart send it at once, even at night. |
| Order confirmation, shipping update | Transactional, if it sells nothing | Shopify keeps order texts as a setting apart from SMS marketing consent. Add a product link or a promotion and Klaviyo counts the message as marketing content. |
Rule text: eCFR, 2026-10-22. Cart rules as each platform states them, read the same day.
A cart text exists to bring the shopper back to buy, which is what the definition above describes. Sent with an autodialer, it needs prior express written consent (§ 64.1200(a)(2)); whether a texting platform counts as an autodialer is argued case by case, so every app here asks for written consent anyway. The box has to be ticked before the cart is left: Postscript states that cart texts go only to people already subscribed. A number typed into the checkout's phone field is not that consent, and Omnisend, for one, brings such numbers in as non-subscribed. The long form of the split, with the rules for each message type, is in TCPA rules for text messages.
One cart, six clocks
Campaigns go out when you schedule them. Flows go out when the shopper does something, and shoppers browse at night. This is the same abandoned cart run through each app's default quiet hours.
Worked example
A shopper with a Tampa number fills a cart at 7:45 p.m. and leaves. The store's cart flow waits 30 minutes, so the text is due at 8:15 p.m. Eastern: inside the federal 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. window, and past Florida's 8 p.m. close.
| App | Sends at, and the wait | Why, from its help centre |
|---|---|---|
| Postscript | 8:00 a.m.11 h 45 min | Florida's 8 p.m. close is built in; the automation waits for waking hours in the subscriber's time zone. |
| Omnisend | 8:00 a.m.11 h 45 min | Default quiet hours, 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. in the recipient's time zone, read from the IP address the store saw. |
| Recart | 9:00 a.m.12 h 45 min | Fixed quiet hours, 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. in the subscriber's time zone, for every promotional flow. |
| Klaviyo | 11:00 a.m.14 h 45 min | Default quiet hours run 8 p.m. to 11 a.m. Eastern; the shopper waits in the flow's queue. |
| Attentive | 12:00 p.m.15 h 45 min | Default quiet hours run 8 p.m. to noon, if the journey message is set to respect them. AI Journeys keep their own schedule. |
| Shopify Messaging | No cart text | Its SMS is campaigns only; there is no automated cart text to hold. |
Each app at its default settings, as its help centre describes them on 2026-10-22. Bars span 16 hours from 8:15 p.m.
Every app that holds the text still lands it inside the 48 hours that Klaviyo and Postscript say carriers allow for a cart message, so a hold costs a few hours, not the sale. The legal line itself: Florida ends commercial telephone solicitation phone calls at 8 p.m. in the called person's time zone and allows no more than three on the same subject in 24 hours (Fla. Stat. § 501.616(6)). That section speaks of phone calls; whether it reaches texts is a question for counsel, and most texting platforms apply it to texts. Oklahoma, Maryland and Washington set the same 8 p.m. close (Washington's statute speaks only of voice calls), Connecticut runs 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Texas allows noon to 9 p.m. on Sundays. One window clears every one of them: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the recipient's time zone, Monday to Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Check one recipient with the quiet-hours checker, or read the state statutes in the mini-TCPA guide.
App by app
Each card repeats the table's rows with the detail from the app's own page. If you are leaving Attentive, the alternatives are compared in Attentive alternatives; the opt-out words every app should catch are listed in SMS opt-out keywords. Other texting comparisons, guides and tools sit in the Texting pillar.
Klaviyo
What it is
An email and SMS marketing platform with a deep Shopify integration: it pulls new SMS subscribers from Shopify's checkout box, can add its own consent block to checkout, thank-you and order status pages, and writes SMS consent back to Shopify.

Stores that run email and texts from one tool and want cart texts held to the carriers' cart rules, sent from a verified toll-free number or a short code.
- Records opt-in with a timestamp and the numberYes
Each profile shows SMS consent status with a consent timestamp; consent belongs to the number that opted in.
- Sends the opt-in confirmation (program, HELP, STOP, frequency, rates)Yes
The default confirmation names the organisation, HELP and STOP, says message and data rates may apply and that frequency varies.
- Double opt-in availableYes
Per list. Checkout opt-ins confirm by text before they count when the list is set to double opt-in, which Klaviyo strongly recommends.
- Honours STOP and plain-language revocation automaticallyYes
All seven FCC words, plus unsubscribe detection that reads replies like "remove me". On by default for US numbers.
- Quiet-hours window by the recipient's time zoneYes
Campaigns check each recipient's location and delay or skip anyone inside quiet hours.

List and segment exports carry SMS consent status and the consent timestamp.
Postscript
What it is
SMS marketing built for Shopify stores, installed as a sales channel. Popups, keywords and the Shopify checkout box feed it, and a number only becomes a subscriber after an on-site code or a reply of Y.
Who it fits
Stores whose texts are mostly automations (cart, browse, welcome) and that want state windows applied without setting them by hand.
- Records opt-in with a timestamp and the numberYes
Each opt-in creates a record of the subscriber's consent; opt-in and opt-out records are kept after a deletion request.
- Sends the opt-in confirmation (program, HELP, STOP, frequency, rates)Yes
"You're subscribed! Reply STOP to unsubscribe, HELP for help." The request text before it names cart reminders and the rates line.
- Double opt-in availableYes
Every number passes Confirmed Opt-in (reply Y) or Onsite Opt-in (a code typed on the page).
- Honours STOP and plain-language revocation automaticallyYes
Variations, typos and phrases like "take me off this list" or "wrong number" unsubscribe automatically.
- Quiet-hours window by the recipient's time zoneYes
Campaigns wait for waking hours in the subscriber's time zone, read from the phone number.
- Holds automated texts (cart, browse, welcome) to quiet hoursYes
Automations triggered at night wait for morning. Florida, Connecticut, Maryland, Oklahoma and Washington get 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Texas must be switched on. Its guide opens Connecticut at 8 a.m., an hour before the statute's 9 a.m. (Conn. Gen. Stat. § 42-288a(c)).
- Brings in SMS opt-ins from Shopify's own checkout boxYes
Shopify checkout opt-ins arrive after the order is placed; cart automations go only to numbers already subscribed.
- Writes SMS consent back to the Shopify customer recordCheck with the vendor
No write-back of SMS consent to Shopify's customer record appears in the help centre.
- Consent records exportableCheck with the vendor
Attentive
What it is
An SMS and email platform for consumer brands, built around sign-up units, journeys and two-way texting, connected to Shopify both ways through its public app.
Who it fits
Larger brands that want Shopify and the texting tool to agree on who is subscribed, and a team that manages journeys message by message.
- Records opt-in with a timestamp and the numberYes
Each subscriber profile shows the date Attentive learned of the opt-in and how it was collected.
- Sends the opt-in confirmation (program, HELP, STOP, frequency, rates)Yes
Every text welcome journey opens with a mandatory legal message.
- Double opt-in availableYes
Sign-ups sit as "joined" until confirmed; welcome settings can require a reply of Y.
- Honours STOP and plain-language revocation automaticallyNo
Seven opt-out words act at once. Other opt-out phrasing gets a reply asking the subscriber to text STOP, without opting them out.
- Quiet-hours window by the recipient's time zoneYes
Journeys use the subscriber's local time. Scheduled campaigns are not held in quiet hours, only flagged before they go.
- Holds automated texts (cart, browse, welcome) to quiet hoursYes
Each journey message can respect quiet hours, with an optional state switch. AI Journeys keep their own 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. schedule, and their cart messages may fall outside it.
- Brings in SMS opt-ins from Shopify's own checkout boxYes
"Sync your Shopify SMS subscribers to Attentive" is on by default; the checkout box feeds a welcome journey.
- Writes SMS consent back to the Shopify customer recordYes
"Forward SMS marketing consent to Shopify" sends new subscribers and opt-in or opt-out changes back.
- Consent records exportableCheck with the vendor
Segment exports carry the number, SMS marketing status and an opt-out flag, with no opt-in date column.
Omnisend
What it is
An email and SMS platform for Shopify stores. Its forms will not collect a phone number without a TCPA consent checkbox, and the consent record lands on the contact's profile.
Who it fits
Smaller stores that want quiet hours and frequency caps on by default and accept single opt-in for texts.

How we read the claims
Questions store owners ask
Do abandoned-cart texts need written consent?
Treat them as if they do. The FCC defines telemarketing as a message sent to encourage a purchase (47 CFR § 64.1200(f)(13)), and a telemarketing text sent with an autodialer needs prior express written consent (47 CFR § 64.1200(a)(2)). Since Facebook v. Duguid an autodialer is equipment that can use a random or sequential number generator, and whether a texting platform qualifies is argued case by case; state laws such as Florida's and Oklahoma's write texts in directly. The apps here run cart flows only to marketing subscribers for that reason, and the stakes are $500 per call or text, up to three times that ($1,500) if the court finds the violation willful or knowing.
Does Shopify's checkout checkbox count as written consent?
It can, if the words beside it do the work. The FCC's written-consent definition asks for a signed agreement that clearly discloses two things: that the person authorizes the seller's telemarketing sent with an autodialer or a prerecorded voice, and that agreeing is not a condition of purchase (47 CFR § 64.1200(f)(9)). Shopify's default label talks about news and offers, and Shopify itself says to change it if you send abandoned cart reminders. Keep the box unticked: Klaviyo's checkout block cannot be pre-checked, because checking it is how the shopper gives consent.
Is double opt-in required for a Shopify SMS app?
Not by the FCC's definition, which does not mention it. Klaviyo says US carriers require double opt-in before cart abandonment texts; Omnisend offers single opt-in only for SMS and says the TCPA does not require double opt-in; Recart calls both compliant and recommends a code typed on the page. Shopify records which one happened: each customer's SMS consent carries an opt-in level of single, confirmed or unknown.
A customer replied "stop texting me". What does the app have to do?
Treat it as STOP. The rule in force lets people revoke consent by any reasonable method, names stop, quit, end, revoke, opt out, cancel and unsubscribe, and gives the sender no more than ten business days; one confirmation text sent within five minutes is presumed allowed. Klaviyo, Postscript, Omnisend and Recart act on that kind of reply automatically. Attentive replies asking the subscriber to text STOP. Shopify Messaging's toll-free sender cannot receive replies, so its opt-out is the link in each campaign. A newer FCC order (FCC 26-67) would let senders name one exclusive revocation method, but it is adopted and not yet in effect: it starts 30 days after Federal Register publication, which had not happened by 2026-10-22.
We are switching SMS apps. What has to come with the list?
Each number's opt-in date, source and the wording it agreed to. Shopify's customer export only says yes or no for SMS, Klaviyo does not pull in historical Shopify SMS subscribers on its own, and Attentive asks for its Outside Subscriber List Certification before moving another tool's subscribers; Attentive also notes that carriers require you to tell subscribers before you text from a new number. Never top the list up with numbers you did not collect: the carriers' guidelines say senders should not use opt-in lists that have been rented, sold, or shared.
Do we need 10DLC registration for a Shopify SMS app?
Usually not. The apps here send US texts from a toll-free number or a short code: Klaviyo lists no US long codes, Postscript assigns a toll-free number on install and runs its verification, Omnisend needs a verified toll-free number, and Shopify Messaging's toll-free registration takes 2 to 5 business days. Toll-free numbers go through carrier verification instead, and a rejected verification can come down to opt-in wording that does not say the texts are marketing.
